Matching Questions enable you to define prompts and answer pairs for students to match with one another while avoiding distractors. Matching questions are automatically marked against the prompt and answer pairs provided.
In this article, we will cover:
1. Creating a Matching Question
2. Setting the correct answer
Creating a Matching Question Type
- Click Select question type.
- Select Matching from the list.
- Alternatively, click Add Question and select Matching from the available list.
- Once the question template is added, you will see an empty matching question block, and you can begin constructing your question.
Required fields
To set up your matching question, you must complete the required fields. To set the required fields:
- Click on Question/Answer pair to add a pair of corresponding or matching answers. Click Add Distractor (optional) to add a distractor statement to your question.
- Click on Points to set the number of points allocated to the question. Note that this cannot be zero.
- With Matching Question Type, you have the option to toggle on Shuffle choice order (optional), which would jumble up the answer choices.
- With Matching Question Type, you also have the option to toggle on Require all correct answers (optional). When this option is enabled, student responses will be marked as incorrect unless all prompts and answers are paired correctly.
When this option is disabled, students will be marked automatically through equal allocation of points and number statements.
Setting the correct answers
Once the required fields have been set, you must provide some prompt and answer pairs for the matching question.
To set up your matching question type correctly, there are four steps that you need to complete:
- Click Add prompt and enter your prompt into the text field.
- Click Add answer and enter your corresponding answer into the text field.
- Repeat Steps 1-3 to create more prompt and answer pairs. Note: These will be set as the correct match between the prompt on the left and the answer on the right . Student answers will be compared against these pairs.
- Click Add Distractor and enter your distractor statement into the text field.
Note: Distractors should not be a correct match to any of the prompts on the left side.
