Question Type - Hotspot questions

Hotspot questions enable you to test a student’s ability to recognise specific features of an image, allowing for analysis and application of knowledge. These features, called hotspots, are associated with questions and answers. Hotspot questions are automatically graded against how accurately the students identify or select these areas.

In this article, we will cover:

1. Creating a Hotspot Question
2. Setting the correct answer: Hotspot
3. Setting the correct answer: Labels Dropdown
4. Setting the correct answer: Labels Text Entry

Creating a Hotspot Question

  1. Click Select question type.
  2. Select Hotspot from the list.

Required fields

To set up your hotspot question, you will need to complete the required fields. To set the required fields:

  1. Click Browse File to upload the relevant image for your question. Note that we currently accept PNG and JPEG formats, with a maximum size of 5MB.
  2. Click on Points to set the number of points allocated to the question. Note that this cannot be zero.
  3. Select the appropriate answer type from Hotspot, Labels Dropdown, and Labels Text Entry. These options determine how students will interact with the image to provide their answers.

Setting the correct answer: Hotspot

This option allows you to define one or more areas on the image that students must identify. The student’s score depends on how close they are to the designated areas.

To define regions and accepted answers for a Hotspot question:

  1. Ensure that Hotspot is selected from the answer options.
  2. Click Add Hotspot, then click the circle icon to begin creating a polygon.
  3. Click and drag to set the first two points of your area. Click to set the third point, and double-click to complete the fourth point.
  4. (Optional) Enable Allow Multiple Regions if you want to assign multiple hotspots to a single question.

Setting the correct answer: Labels Dropdown

This option allows you to label points on the image, and students must select the correct label from a dropdown menu.

To define features and accepted answers of a Labels Dropdown question:

  1. Enter your question in the "Write your question here" field.
  2. Upload your image.
  3. Ensure that Labels Dropdown is selected from the answer options.
  4. Right-click on the points you want students to identify.
  5. Enter the correct label for each point. You can also add distractors—incorrect options that students can choose to make the question more challenging.

Setting the correct answer: Labels Text Entry

This option is similar to the dropdown version, but students will enter their answers in a text field rather than selecting from a dropdown. The answer is then compared to your list of acceptable responses.

To  define features and accepted answers of a Labels Text Entry question:

  1. Ensure that Labels Text Entry is selected from the answer options.
  2. Right-click on the points you want students to identify.
  3. Enter the acceptable answers for each point. These answers will be compared to student submissions.
